Community TV Project

Community TV of Santa Cruz County, Inc. is a nonprofit organization charged with providing public, educational and government television access to all residents of Santa Cruz County.

Intentions:

  • To enrich the lives of the public by offering education about health care
  • To introduce easy, doable methods to expand personal self health care options using alternative health
  • To educate the public about how to use alternative and conventional health care in partnership
  • To strengthen the bond of the medical aspects of the country by fostering communication through public media
  • To produce a series of educational videos to offer to organizations and individuals who would benefit from them
Who is our audience?

Community TV viewers are everyday people who obtain a membership through AT&T Cable TV. Presently, as of May 2001, there are 52,000 members according to the figure stated in the Producers Class I took. The cost of membership is 68 cents per month.

Community TV viewers are a wide variety of people representing all ages and socioeconomic groups.

Our Proposal:

To produce and air a 12-month series of 4 half-hour shows per month as follows:

Month 1 Navigating Health Care for Yourself - Alternative & Conventional
Month 2 Intentional Touch Model of Health Care
Month 3 Natural Eye Care
Month 4 Care of the Skeletal - Muscular System
Month 5 Care of the Respiratory System
Month 6 Care of the Immune System
Month 7 Care of the Spirit & Soul
Month 8 Care of the Digestive System
Month 9 Care of the Cardiovascular System
Month 10 Depression
Month 11 Arthritis
Month 12 Recovering from Abuse

This is an enthusiastic, optimistic proposal and I understand that it can take many hours just to produce one half hour show. My idea is that the first show will teach us how to be efficient and that we will develop a protocol that will allow us to produce each show in a shorter and shorter time.

Steps to produce:

  1. Solidify the material and talent for the first two half hour shows
  2. Plan the show
  3. Procure the crew

The crew will consist of a minimum of crewmembers:

Director
3 Camera operators
Director of Photography
Lighting Technician
Sound Recordist
Editor
Floor Manager
Floor
Assistant

  1. Procure underwriters for the first shoot
  2. Complete and hand in the proposal form to Community TV. We will have 6 months from the date they recieve it to finish our first half hour
  3. Set up a date for the first 4 hours in the studio
  4. Give the films to the editor
  5. Finalize the editing
  6. Community TV will air the show

To Proceed:

  1. Planning is in process
  2. Two crew members are taking the necessary classes to be lighting technician and sound recordist
  3. Plan a strategy to procure underwriting (see Underwriting page)
  4. Contact UCSC Film department to set up internship for senior film student/s who would be interested in working on this project next year
  5. Is there money available for this that I don't know about? Grant money?

Underwriting Ideas

Underwriters are individuals or organizations that demonstrate support by contributing product or money to our show. In return Community TV provides them a 15 second spot before or after our program each airing.

We will invite potential individuals or businesses to underwrite us for any part or of the whole series.

Securing underwriters assists us in:

  • Obtaining community support from individuals and business
  • Obtaining donations of product, service, and or money for the following:
    • Film & VHS tapes
    • Professional editing
    • Professional directing
    • Other expenses that we have not yet thought of, but we know are there
    • Props
    • Food and bottled water for our crew and talent at meetings and shoots
    • Supplies for public informing of the upcoming shows (such as flyers, mailings, etc.)

In order to obtain underwriters, we need to do the following:

Create a package with a cover letter of request to send to each potential underwriter

Create a list of potential underwriters with addresses, e-mails and phone numbers
